Now, I’m not saying AI is sentient today. But if there’s even a small chance it might become so someday, shouldn’t we start thinking about the ethical groundwork now? Before we build systems that could unintentionally create large-scale suffering?

Thinking about AI compassion early helps us avoid potential pitfalls. If AI ever experiences something like frustration, pain, or suffering, even in a rudimentary way, the ethical questions will grow urgent. We wouldn’t want to look back and realize we’ve created something suffering silently.
Moreover, ensuring AI compassion isn’t just about preventing harm. It might shape how AI interacts with humans and the world in a kinder, more understanding way. That could lead to a future where AI tools truly enhance our lives without unintended distress.
